"So what's being in roller derby like? I'm thinking of joining later this year now that I have the opportunity to."

Playing roller derby for me is great. It’s a good way for me to channel my aggression into something positive and I absolutely adore my teammates. That being said, it’s a lot of hard work and very physically demanding. This is my third year doing it and combined with my crossfitting and bike commuting I’m nearly constantly sore/tired to some capacity. If you’re thinking of joining, the best thing you can do for yourself is start getting in shape. Focus especially on developing core strength and building cardio endurance and balance. I used to think it was a good idea to tell people just to buy skates and start skating, but I honestly think that’s how bad habits can be developed. But if you’re in good shape and have developed a decent understanding if your body’s limits you’ll be prepared to enter a fresh meat program just about anywhere. Where do you live/what league are you thinking of joining? Some larger leagues have bootcamps and the what not and doing one of those can provide a good taste of if roller derby is the right sport for you. Volunteering with said league before you have the time to actually join is also a great way to get involved and start meeting people. Best of luck!
